ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – A proposed 32-thousand dollar pay hike for judges in Newfoundland and Labrador has been voted down by the provincial legislature.
An independent tribunal recommended a 14 per cent salary increase over four years ending this fiscal year.
However, the governing Liberals tabled a resolution earlier this week calling the pay raise too rich for provincial coffers in light of a deficit approaching two billion dollars.
The vote was held yesterday.
Under the plan judges pay would have reached nearly 248-thousand dollars a year.
