ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The Newfoundland and Labrador government is considering salary hikes for judges as it deals with angry fallout from a tax-raising deficit budget.
An independent tribunal says provincial court judges who earn almost 216-thousand dollars a year should get a 14 per cent raise.
That amounts to almost 32-thousand dollars a year.
Provincial Justice ministry spokesman Luke Joyce says the increases date back to 2013 and include retroactive pay totalling almost one million dollars.
He says the average salary for judges in Atlantic Canada last year was about 242-thousand dollars.
The highest paid provincial court judges in Alberta earn almost 294-thousand dollars.
By law, the Newfoundland and Labrador government must decide by June 1st whether to accept, change or reject the tribunal’s recommendations.
