ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Critics of hydraulic fracturing say they’re pleased a report recommends a cautious approach to the controversial industry in western Newfoundland.

Simon Jansen of the Newfoundland and Labrador Fracking Awareness Network says there are better, renewable energy options.

He was reacting to a report released yesterday by a government-appointed panel.

The review says there are too many unanswered questions about the impact fracking might have in western Newfoundland.

It recommends the province continue its freeze on fracking applications until gaps in scientific data are addressed.

The report offers a graduated series of recommendations when and if the province lifts its current “pause” on fracking.

They include studying how wastewater would be handled, and the extent of existing rural fire and emergency services.

Paul Barnes of the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers says the report offers a balanced way forward.

It’s believed Newfoundland’s west coast has deep shale formations that hold oil.
