SAINT JOHN, N.B. – More than 100 nursing home beds are being created in New Brunswick to cut down on hospital waiting lists.

The provincial government says 108 beds originally designated as specialized care beds will be converted to nursing home beds in Saint John and Fredericton.

Social Development Minister Cathy Rogers says the conversions will allow seniors to move out of hospitals and into nursing homes.

She says the beds were already under construction by Shannex and met the higher standard required for nursing homes.

Shannex has hired 20 extra staff members for its Fredericton location and is hiring 80 to 100 employees in Saint John as a result of the conversions.

Seniors are expected to move into the Saint John facility in June, while residents moved into the Fredericton nursing home earlier this year.
