Political party platforms built in Nova Scotia for the next provincial election campaign must include planks supporting Black and Indigenous communities, a panel discussion heard Thursday.

One way to help Black voters and other racialized residents is to form citizen-led groups that would work closely with governments, a panelist said during the virtual event hosted by Dalhousie University.

Regarding health care for visible minorities, for instance, “perhaps there are citizens – councils – or some version of that, that need to happen to advise government about what’s going on with respect to policies around everything,” said Aruna Dhara, a family doctor who provides care for First Nations patients, African Nova Scotians and others.
