MEMBERTOU — First Nations leaders from British Columbia are visiting Membertou in hopes of learning from the local aboriginal community’s economic success.
Representatives of the Okanagan Indian Band arrived in Sydney on Wednesday and are spending several days meeting, observing and reporting on the Mi’kmaw Economic Benefits Office and its Unama’ki model for economic development.
Darcy Aubin, the band’s director of lands and economic development, said the three-person delegation was sent to Cape Breton after their chief, Byron Louis, learned of Membertou’s success story at a recent conference.
“We’re here to replicate the success they’ve had here and to learn how to build the steps in order to do that because we are fairly new to the land development game,” said Aubin.
