(NL-Homicide)

A woman charged with first-degree murder in connection with the slaying of man in St. John’s will appear in court later this month.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says officers arrested 28-year-old Anne Norris on Friday.

The body of Marcel Reardon was discovered under a stairwell outside an apartment building last Monday.

Norris is expected back in court May 24. (The Canadian Press)

(NS-Union-Election)

There’s a new hand at the helm of Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union for the first time in 17 years.

Jason MacLean, a Sydney-based correctional officer, took over the role at a union convention in Halifax yesterday.

Joan Jessome announced in December that she would step down from the position. (The Canadian Press)

(NB-Moose-Draw)

New Brunswick is accepting applications for its moose hunt draw.

The Department of Natural Resources says there are 51 licences still available for the five-day season in September.

Applications will be accepted from May 16 to June 10. (The Canadian Press)

(NS-Mill-Fine)

The Pictou Landing First Nation will collect some of the 225-thousand-dollar fine that Northern Pulp received following an effluent spill two years ago.

The company pleaded guilty in January to a Federal Fisheries Act charge of illegally dumping a harmful substance into a habitat where fish were found.

A provincial court judge has ruled the Pictou County Landing First Nation, the Mi’kmaw Conservation Group and the Pictou County Rivers Association will each receive 75-thousand dollars.

Northern Pulp has until the end of June to pay the fine. (CKHJ)

(PEI-Halibut-Cuts)

P-E-I’s official Opposition is condemning a federal government cut to the Island’s halibut quota.

The 13 per cent cut was attacked by the Progressive Conservative’s in legislature on Friday.

Tory Darlene Compton said the cut could hurt more than 300 Island fishers’ paycheques annually. (The Canadian Press)

(NS-Bird-Habitat)

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust will add Gannet Rock to the network of bird habitats it is protecting.

The organization says the island in the Bay of Fundy is a critical stop for many birds using the “Atlantic Flyway” on their migratory journeys.

The trust hopes to revive populations of the Northern Gannet, which have suffered in the past because of a loss of habitat and humans hunting them. (The Canadian Press)
