‘It’s so exciting to see everyone, especially the children, out dancing in their regalia’
TRURO – Students will have a chance to be a little bit more involved with Mi’kmaw culture at this year’s Mawio’mi.
Chasity Lucio, co-ordinator of Aboriginal student services at the Nova Scotia Community College Truro campus, said the eighth annual event at the college will feature a number of workshops.
“In the past, we’ve always received a lot of support from our feeder schools,” said Lucio, adding the teachers are able to add the Mawio’mi into their curriculum. “It’s an exciting event and they want to be here, but because they can’t stay late into the afternoon, they don’t really have the chance to experience the Mawio’mi up close and personal. They can’t extend their stay too far into the afternoon.”
