Celebration to be biggest in region for national Aboriginal Day

Cultural connections and traditions of the past and present are coming to this border town next month when Amherst hosts its first-ever first-nations powwow.

The announcement was made May 24 at town hall during a special kick-off to Indigenous Awareness Week.

“Today we’re here to speak to indigenous cultures and promote pride and understanding of traditions, contributions and historical significance,” Amherst Mayor Robert Small said. “It’s important to grow our knowledge of such cultures… I’m happy Amherst will share a national Aboriginal Day celebration and a powwow on Tuesday, June 21st, and will be proudly making history by creating on of the largest celebrations across Canada.”
