RESOLUTIONS are the essential mechanism by which First Nations provide specific mandates and direction to the Assembly of First Nations. Resolutions should be national in scope and can:

(1) establish a mandate for the AFN; (2) relate to internal matters regarding the operation of the AFN; or (3) support a particular issue, event or situation. Please go to www.afn.ca for more information about the types of resolutions (see “Resolution Procedures”).

ADVANCE SUBMISSION OF A RESOLUTION IS REQUIRED. In order to facilitate a more efficient and effective resolution process advance submission of resolutions is required. The resolution submission deadline is the Friday two full weeks prior to the first day of a scheduled Assembly – in this case Friday, June 24, 2016. Any and all resolutions received after the deadline will be reviewed according to the AFN process for late resolutions. Accepted late resolutions will be clearly marked as such and will be dealt with at a special designated time on the Assembly Agenda.

RESOLUTION DEADLINE: Friday, June 24, 2016

ACCEPTANCE OF A RESOLUTION by the Resolutions Committee will only occur if the respective names and First Nations of the mover and seconder are noted on the resolution. The mover and seconder must be either a Chief or a duly mandated Proxy and available to speak to the Resolution at the Assembly. If the mover and seconder are not noted on a resolution submitted for consideration, then the resolution will not be recorded and entered into the process as an official draft resolution for consideration by the Resolutions Committee.

RESOLUTION FORMAT is preferably electronic. A resolution template is attached to this notice to assist you in preparing a resolution and is also available at www.afn.ca.
