Position Summary:

The Lazaridis School of Business & Economics develops leaders with skills in management and economics for a rapidly changing and complex global environment. It seeks to advance knowledge and practices in these fields by supporting both theoretical and applied research. Further, the Lazaridis School strives to serve business and its community by fostering mutually beneficial alliances with leaders at local, national, and international levels.

The Startup Lab provides support, mentorship, and resources to startups, both traditional enterprises and social ventures, founded by Laurier students and alumni at all of Laurier’s campuses. The Startup Lab is 100% supported through donations.

The Startup Lab Program Lead serves as the leader of the program who works autonomously with little oversight. The incumbent is responsible for operationalizing the strategic plan for the program, developing and delivering the program’s curriculum, advising and mentoring both student and community ventures, developing strong relationships with internal and external partners to develop a strong mentor network, researching potential funding opportunities, collecting and analyzing program statistical data, writing reports, coordinating the marketing and communications of the program, and managing the program’s budget.

The incumbent reports to the Manager of the Startup Lab.

This position has a university-wide mandate and is based at the Waterloo Campus.  The incumbent provides services to all campuses, requiring regular interpersonal interactions and collaboration with departments at the Waterloo and Brantford Campuses. Special attention is given to ensure equitable service delivery across all locations.


Program Planning and Operations

  • Develop the operational plan for the Startup Lab program in alignment with both Laurier’s and the Lazaridis School’s respective strategic plans.
  • Determine the key performance indicators and timelines to operationalize the program.
  • Develop and manage a budget to support the program.
  • Research potential funding and revenue generation opportunities for the program.
  • Ensure compliance with both donor agreements and Laurier’s financial policies and procedures in terms of expenditures.
  • Determine and locate other resources required by the program.

Program Development and Delivery

  • Lead the development of a boot camp program by researching and developing educational workshops to guide students and alumni through the start-up and scale-up processes keeping in mind best practices in adult learning, intercultural, and universal design methods.
  • Lead the development of an incubator /accelerator program by creating a mentoring network for entrepreneurs, providing referrals as necessary, and providing space for the ideation, development, and growth of businesses.
  • Ensure that all programming is designed to address the challenges to student and alumni entrepreneurs.
  • Facilitate engaging workshops, boot camps, accelerator, and networking events, or other initiatives that fall within the Program’s entrepreneurship ecosystem to foster a culture of collaboration among the program participants and other players within the entrepreneurial ecosystem.
  • Advises program participants on entrepreneurship best practices and opportunities to further develop ventures.
  • Coordinate the mentorship program which includes locating mentors within the local business community, matching of mentors, coordinating meetings, and monitoring the relationships.
  • Collect and analyze program metrics to ensure that the program is meeting its key performance indicators.
  • Iterate the program as necessary based on metrics and feedback.
  • Ensure that all programming complies with AODA standards.

Outreach, Marketing, and Communication

  • Perform all marketing and outreach activities to recruit participants, including coordinating the intakes and assessment process.
  • Develop and deliver outreach initiatives to the community in the support of student and alumni entrepreneurship.
  • Plan, develop, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate organic content for social media platforms in line with Laurier standards.
  • Present information sessions to those interested in joining the Startup Lab.

 Networking and Reporting

  • Liaise with the Dean of the Lazaridis School on program planning and implementation.
  • Liaise with the Development Office on the specifics of any grants including their reporting requirements.
  • Liaise with the start-up and scale-up communities to ensure that programming is following best practices and to look for collaboration opportunities.
  • Liaise with the Lazaridis School’s marketing department to market the program.
  • Liaise with campus partners as necessary to ensure the success of the program.
  • Provide regular program and financial updates to Lazaridis School senior leadership.
  • Complete quarterly and annual program reports.
  • Complete donor and grant reports as required.

Collegiality and Professionalism

  • Support the Wilfrid Laurier University values, vision, mission, and strategy.
  • Remain up to date on information regarding community events of interest to entrepreneurs.
  • Support and assist colleagues within the Lazaridis School during high-pressure times to ensure that the business of the School is completed on time, including, support with events and reports.
  • Maintain confidentiality around programs, reports, and budgets.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and attitude as an ambassador of Laurier to external partners.
  • Stay current on the most recent and relevant legislation, policies, best practices, literature, and software, related to the accountabilities and qualifications of the position.
  • Ensure that the manager is kept to-date on all important items related to the position through electronic or in-person communication and seek advice when necessary.

Reporting Relationships:

  • This position oversees up to 75 boot camp and 50 accelerator participants as well as coordinates approximately 30 external partners as mentors.


  • Master’s degree
  • Minimum 6 years of relevant experience with 3 years of leadership experience.
  • Knowledge of entrepreneurship, small business, marketing, sales, and customer service.
  • Personal experience as an entrepreneur.
  • Ability to work well autonomously with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to think independently, set priorities, and resolve problems effectively and efficiently.
  • Ability to make principled decisions quickly and independently.
  • Demonstrated experience developing long-term program plans that led to successful implementation.
  • Experience with project management.
    • Project Management Professional certification is an asset.
  • Relevant experience managing budgets.
  • Experience researching potential donor and government grant opportunities.
  • Experience implementing and reporting on donor funds and government grants.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing and delivering educational programming.
  • Relevant experience in developing and managing an incubator /accelerator program.
  • Demonstrated experience working with entrepreneurs including recruiting, training, and providing day-to-day advising, guidance, and direction.
  • Relevant experience developing and reporting on program metrics.
  • An understanding of the responsibilities under AODA legislation.
  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of online communities and social media platforms.
  • Strong planning, analytical, verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Strong network and knowledge of the entrepreneurship ecosystem in the Toronto-Waterloo Region corridor.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • A high degree of professionalism; leading with openness, transparency, and humility.
  • Proven ability to take initiative, work under pressure, and successfully meet deadlines.
  • Proven attention to detail in a consistently accurate and efficient manner.

Position Grade: 9

Rate of Pay: $ 37.43- 44.02 per hour

Hours of Work:

This is a full-time, limited-term position until April 29, 2022. The normal hours of work are 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM. Monday to Friday. Flexibility in hours will be required, including evening and/or weekend work due to programming and events.  When possible, the manager will adjust the work schedule so that no more than 35 hours are worked in a week.
