Responsibilities

  • Act as a member of the justice services team with the Nunatsiavut Government.
  • Provide necessary case management services to individuals exiting corrections (i.e. assist with reintegration, accessing financial services, housing, counselling, referrals to treatment, etc.)
  • Liaise with corrections, court, RCMP, family, community, etc. to support successful community reintegration and case planning.
  • Support individuals in understanding and following legal conditions, conditions of release, probation, parole and attending appointments as part of those conditions.
  • Support justice involved and at risk individuals in connecting to supportive services, such as cultural and social supports (i.e. attending group programming, land-based and cultural programming, etc.).
  • Assisting individuals in various ways that support equitable access to social determinants of Inuit health (i.e. meeting basic health and wellness needs, housing supports, employment, education, mental wellness services, ensuring food security, necessary supports focused on building life skills, etc..).
  • Maintain partnerships with justice service providers at the community and regional level.
  • Participate in carrying out supportive plans for diversionary and restorative justice approaches with justice-involved individuals.
  • Refer to existing programs and advocate for programs, which support culturally relevant healing for those exiting the justice system or those who are at risk of entering the justice system.
  • Work closely with current mainstream justice systems to advocate for culturally relevant approaches with Inuit involved in systems
  • Participate in identifying the needs of individuals navigating the justice system and support the Regional Justice Services Manager in writing proposals to secure funding for identified programs/services.
  • Provide other liaison and case management services, as needed.
  • Partake in regional and other travel as it relates to client and committee work

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Worker or related field with 3-5 years of experience in case management, service coordination and/or providing frontline client services in the area of criminal justice or coordination of diversionary services/supports.
  • Strong understanding of intergenerational trauma and upstream issues contributing to over representation of Indigenous populations in the criminal justice system.
  • Experience with northern Inuit and/or Indigenous communities
  • Ability to travel for work as required
