This event will be a two-part tour of a historical area in Halifax, NS, called Africville. It will feature the history and parallels of Black and racialized community forced displacement echoed in many major cities under the guise of urban renewal and eradicating blight. Earlier this year, we at HAS daylighted these very similarities within the Vancouver, BC, area known as Hogan’s Alley. The CAEH conference in Halifax offers all of us, already so deeply committed to working to end homelessness, the unique opportunity to view and experience the history of the vibrant Black community of Africville. This location is a piece of the legacy of people of Black/African descent in Canada and pushes back against the anti-Blackness that keeps these stories hidden. These shared stories of forced relocation can provide a more profound understanding of the systemically oppressive policy and practices that still contribute to the proportionally high level of BIPOC homelessness in the present day.

Schedule Details:

1:30 pm: depart CAEH conference centre in chartered buses to head to Africville

2:10 pm: Group A indoor/ group B outdoor and then groups switch

2:45 pm: Group B indoor/ group A outdoor

3:15 pm: Indoor historical talk and light meal

4:00 pm: Charter buses back to CAEH conference centre

*Due to the limited available capacity of the tour we strongly encourage CAEA attendees that cannot attend the tour to visit the Africville Museum independently or with a few colleagues. Suggested transportation UBER/ Lyft approx. $12-15 each way
