Government of Canada Recognizes the National Historic Significance of the 18th century Mi’kmaq-French Alliance

The Honourable Wayne Easter, Member of Parliament for Malpeque, will take part in a Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque unveiling ceremony to commemorate the 18th century Mi’kmaq-French Alliance as an event of national historic significance.
Mr. Easter will make the announcement on behalf of the Minister of Environment and Climate Change and Minister responsible for Parks Canada, Catherine McKenna.
The 18th century Mi’kmaq–French alliance was a political and military relationship between sovereign peoples, based on shared and respective needs in trade and war. It emerged from Mi’kmaq-French relationships dating back to the early 17th century. Beginning in the 1720s, they frequently met at the site now known as Skmaqn–Port-la-Joye–Fort Amherst NHS to renew their alliance by exchanging gifts, strengthening religious ties, and engaging in diplomacy.
