Loretta Gould becoming known for her paintings, work in books

WE’KOQMA’Q, N.S. — When Loretta Gould’s sewing machine stopped working six years ago, it was the beginning of a whole new career for her.

“It took me six months to get it back,” says Gould, who decided to try her hand at painting while she waited for the repairs.

She never looked back. Today, the sewing machine remains in a closet while Gould makes a name for herself as an artist and book illustrator, after a stint as a photographer.

“I’ve been told I have a good eye,” says the mother of six who became interested in painting after one of her children became interested in art. “I am mostly self-taught.”
