Treaty One Territory – The Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak (MKO) is in mourning after the loss of three young people on the Nisichawayasihk First Nation.

“We are heartbroken to hear of this tragedy and our hearts and prayers go out to the families and the community of Nisichawayasihk. Words cannot convey the enormity of such a loss and the impact this will have in the hearts of those who knew and walked beside these children. Kids need to feel safe in their community,” Grand Chief Sheila North said. “The MKO’s Mobile Crisis Response Team is speaking with leadership and members within Nisichawayasihk and will deploy to the community upon request. We will do what we can to offer mental and emotional support to the families and community as they deal with this terrible loss.”

The MKO Mobile Crisis Response Team has been providing holistic, culturally sensitive and safe crisis response and trauma intervention to First Nation communities across the province. The Crisis Team arose due to calls for greater mental health services and crisis response in Manitoba’s north. The MKO knows that children are the centre of First Nation communities and families, and once again we express our sincerest condolences and positive thoughts to the victims’ families and community.
