Nunatukavut contributes $5000 to Diabetes Canada through Liz’s Walk

HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, LABRADOR, November 14, 2018 – The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) today announced another $5,000 contribution to Diabetes Canada through Liz’s Walk.

Liz’s Walk is a cause started by Guy Poole over 13 years ago in memory of his wife, Elizabeth (Liz) Poole, who lost her life to complications from diabetes. Each year, he walks approximately 300 kilometres in different parts of Labrador and on the island of Newfoundland to raise awareness and money for diabetes research and to help find a cure.

President Todd Russell presented Guy with NCC’s contribution cheque during NCC’s Annual General Assembly in Port Hope Simpson on October 27, 2018. While Guy is currently nursing a knee injury, his next walk is tentatively scheduled to take place from Cartwright to Black Tickle in the spring of 2019. He then plans to walk again in Newfoundland in September.

NCC is committed to giving back to the community and continues to support initiatives that make a positive difference in the lives of Southern Inuit and those in the wider community.

Quick Facts

  • NCC has supported Liz’s Walk since its inception and has dedicated financial and human resources every year since. NCC has provided $18,000 in cash contributions since 2015.
  • Since 2006, Guy Poole has walked close to 4,000 kilometres in memory of his late wife Liz and has raised over $160,000 in support of diabetes research to date.

Quotes

“It is amazing what NCC is doing for Liz’s Walk again this year. Their continued support blows me away. For me, I’m just doing what I love to do, which is walk. In my opinion, the most important work is being done through the support and contributions of groups like NCC, my coworkers at Vale, volunteers who help to fundraise and all others who give. My hope is that one day, together, we can find a cure for this terrible disease.”

  • Guy Poole, creator of Liz’s Walk

“On behalf of NCC, I thank Guy and his outstanding team for their unwavering dedication to finding a cure for diabetes. I have walked with Guy many times over the years. He is a dear friend, a former colleague, an Elder, a leader and a remarkable human being. Diabetes affects so many of our people and NCC truly believes in the vital work that Diabetes Canada and so many others do in helping fight this chronic disease.”
