NL-OCYA: The Child and Youth Advocate Releases 2016 Recommendations Report
December 20th, 2017
The Office of the Child and Youth Advocate has released the 2016 Status Report on Recommendations today entitled Not There Yet. This report is issued annually. It reports progress and status of the Office of the Child and Youth Advocate and Child Death Review Committee recommendations to December 2016.
This report points to success. Ninety per cent of the Office of Child and Youth Advocate’s 183 recommendations have been implemented, and 74 per cent of Child Death Review Committee’s 31 recommendations have been implemented. But numbers also tell another story in Not There Yet. Outstanding recommendations remain, and some are old. This work must be concluded in order for children and youth to experience the benefits of the recommended changes.
The Child and Youth Advocate will continue to follow up with any new or outstanding recommendations until they are all appropriately addressed. The 2017 review process will assess all previously concluded recommendations to ensure that valuable progress in responding to children and youth has not slipped. Jackie Lake Kavanagh, Child and
Youth Advocate, stated, “It is important for young people who are the focus of investigations to know we stand by and monitor our recommendations until they are addressed. We believe that children, youth, and the general public expect and deserve nothing less.”
