Mi’kmaq fiddler says instrument is a big part of his life – Cape Breton Post

We’koqma’q, N.S. — Morgan Toney remembers fondly when his uncle Fabian Toney brought him a DVD of the farewell tour of Phil Collins, he’d listen to it every day and sparked a life in music.

In 2016, he took up drumming and just over a year ago he began playing the fiddle in earnest. And as he practised, his family’s connection to the fiddle came strumming out.

“Stories weren’t brought up until I picked up the fiddle and that’s the only influence I need right now to keep playing,” said the 20-year-old.

His great-uncles and his great-grandfather all used to play the instrument, but stories of their playing didn’t come out until Toney started himself. Then he was shown pictures and realized the deep connection with the fiddle.
