Message of condolence from President Russell on the passing of Mayor John Hickey – NunatuKavut Community Council

“I was shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the tragic passing of Mayor Hickey. John was a fighter all of his life and passionately fought for what he believed in. He never gave up in the face of challenge. He was tenacious, stubborn and determined. While we all knew that he had a very serious accident, I believe we all felt, and yes hoped, that this same determined spirit would help him get though. Sadly, it was not to be and his family, his friends, his colleagues and all of Labrador mourns this loss.

Personally, I have known John for many years and my entire political career. We had many meetings and had occasion to attend numerous functions and events together. We agreed and disagreed yet, through it all, we shared a love for the Big Land, its peoples and the hope for a brighter future. Regardless of any differences, I never doubted the love John had for his community, the people of Lake Melville and all of Labrador. He was a friend to many and made a significant and lasting contribution municipally, regionally and provincially. He also had a special place in his heart for young people and for kids, and almost always reached out to acknowledge them and make them feel special and important. This was a connection that has left a lasting impression on so many.

On behalf of the NunatuKavut Community Council, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and those whom he served. His passing leaves an emptiness in the hearts of all who had the honour of knowing him. May your memories of John and the tremendous legacy he has left behind provide you comfort during this extremely difficult time.
