Old athletes, in their minds, never age.

So Morley Googoo must be forgiven if, while sitting in a Halifax City Hall chamber on Wednesday, his mind briefly wandered back to 1992, when he was throwing smoke for the third-place Nova Scotia fast-pitch squad at the North American Indigenous Games in Prince Albert, Sask.

Or, as the high-spirited words echoed off the walls, if he thought, ever so briefly, about when he was once again on the pitching mound as the Nova Scotians beat Ontario for the gold medal in the 1995 games.

“It gave you confidence,” the Assembly of First Nations regional chief for Nova Scotia/Newfoundland said of the 2020 Indigenous Games, which will be held in Halifax and around the province in a year’s time.
