Food insecurity, income and employment lie at the root of mental health problems and suicide faced by Indigenous Canadians, says new Dalhousie University research.
Using data from Statistics Canada’s 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Survey, the Dal study looks at 14,410 individuals representing 600,750 Indigenous adults. It’s an unprecedented examination of socioeconomic status as a determinant of mental health outcomes among off-reserve Indigenous populations.
The researchers found that high rates of psychological distress, suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts are heavily linked to income inequalities among Indigenous Canadians.
