Embracing the environment and reconciliation: ‘Elapultiek by Fire’ is a must-see play – The Register/Advertiser
CANNING – We settler descendants need to sit by the flames of Elapultiek by Fire.
This third production of the season by Two Planks and a Passion Theatre ought to be required viewing for true reconciliation. I’d like to see it staged in the Parade Square of downtown Halifax.
Elapultiek means ‘We Are Looking Towards.’ Ostensibly the play is about endangered chimney swifts, but the whole environment is within playwright and actor Shalan Joudry’s vision. The L’sitkuk or Bear River First Nation artist has achieved something formidable, yet so softly spoken.
A young Mi’kmaq woman and a dedicated biologist meet during the course of a summer at the base of a chimney swift roost. Both are changed by their conversations, but Matthew Lumley as Bill is most transformed.
