FREDERICTON – New Brunswick’s Progressive Conservative leader says he’s already making preparations to form government.

Blaine Higgs told reporters yesterday that he will meet with the Tory caucus to discuss who would take on cabinet roles and how a Higgs government would proceed.

His party squeaked out a one-seat margin in the September 24th election, taking 22 seats to the Liberals’ 21, with the Greens and the People’s Alliance each winning three seats.

Higgs has been calling on Premier Brian Gallant to abandon plans to proceed to a throne speech this month in a bid to hold on to power.

He says Gallant is stalling in the hope that someone will cross the floor to the Liberal ranks, but Higgs says that’s not about to happen.

A Liberal M-L-A dismissed Higgs’ assertions yesterday, saying the party will open the assembly no later than October 23rd with the throne speech — as parliamentary convention permits.

The Liberals are also continuing discussions with the Green Party.
