(Canada-US-Agriculture)

Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay says he and U-S Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue both know they can get a trade deal that will be a win-win for farmers in both countries.

MacAulay made the comments while hosting his American counterpart at his family’s farm in Midgell, P-E-I, where they discussed NAFTA and Canada’s supply management system.

Perdue said he’s not pushing for Canada to do away with its supply management system for dairy, eggs and chicken, but wants a better arrangement.

The meeting comes at a tense time, after U-S President Donald Trump blasted Ottawa for charging a 270 per cent tariff on imported dairy products. (The Canadian Press)

(Care-Facility-Death)

A spokesman for the company that owns a Halifax long-term care home at the centre of a police investigation says it takes the matter of a resident’s death very seriously.

Matt Proctor says Shannex Inc. — which owns Parkstone Enhanced Care — will fully co-operate with the Halifax police as they probe the death of a 40-year-old woman for possible criminal negligence.

Constable Carol McIsaac says the woman’s family members told police they were concerned about the care the woman had received before her death earlier this year.

Police did not identify the woman, but interim P-C Leader Karla MacFarlane says in a statement that the death of Chrissy Dunnington is a “tragic example of how the health crisis is failing Nova Scotians.” (The Canadian Press)

(NL- Innu-Power)

Leaders of the Innu Nation of Labrador say now is the time to connect the north coast to hydro-electric power.

Grand Chief Gregory Rich says it could be the best chance they have to finally get communities on the north coast connected to the grid and moved away from using diesel.

His comments follow word that Vale (VAH’-lay) will construct an underground mine at Voisey’s Bay in northern Labrador, creating hundreds of jobs.

The leaders have met with both Nalcor Energy and the Nunatsiavut government in St. John’s and more meetings are being planned for later this month in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. (VOCM)

(PEI-Population)

Prince Edward Island says its five-year action plan to grow its population is working.

Officials say the province’s population is now larger than ever — at 153-thousand 116 people.

The action plan — which is heading into its second year — focuses on recruiting, retaining and repatriating Islanders, with an emphasis on growing the Island’s rural population.

The province says the working-age population is increasing and is on track to achieve the goal of 100-thousand working age people by the year 2022. (The Canadian Press)

(NL-Bootlegging-Intimidation)

Mounties say a 30-year-old man from Nain was arrested and charged with intimidation of court witnesses in an ongoing investigation into the illegal sale of alcohol in the Labrador community.

Jeffery Solomon Millie has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in provincial court on September 5th.

R-C-M-P say the penalty for bootlegging liquor under the Newfoundland and Labrador Liquor Act can be as high as 50-thousand dollars or imprisonment for up to two years, or both.

They say more charges are anticipated as the investigation continues. (The Canadian Press)

(NB-Human-Rights-Award)

New Brunswickers are being encouraged to submit nominations for the province’s annual Human Rights Award.

The New Brunswick Human Rights Commission established the award to recognize outstanding effort, achievement or leadership by people or organizations who promote equality and human rights.

The deadline for nominations is August 1st and the award is presented on New Brunswick Human Rights Day, September 15th.

Last year’s recipient was the New Brunswick Multicultural Council. (The Canadian Press)
