$59-thousand awarded to address intimate partner violence in New Brunswick

The national RCMP Family Violence Initiative Fund (FVIF) has awarded a total of $59-thousand to support initiatives in New Brunswick.

The Elsipogtog After-School program, an extended collaboration between Elsipogtog Child and Family Services, and Eastern Door, will receive a $20-thousand community grant. The money will be used to engage First Nations youth aged 11-15 in activities that will connect them with their culture. It will also help to create links to community-based support services and mentors.

The Mi’kmaq Wolastoqiyik Association of Social Workers will receive a $19-thousand grant to support a national conference to be held in Fredericton in June, 2019. Participants will share new approaches and leading research on indigenous-led social work practices, including appreciation and understanding of how historical trauma continues to affect communities.

The New Brunswick RCMP will receive $20-thousand to offer two multi-disciplinary training events with Dr. Lori Haskell, a clinical psychologist who is recognized as an expert in the field of trauma response. The training events will focus on understanding complex trauma and victim-centred strategies to improve police and other first responder approaches to victims of intimate partner and sexual violence.

The RCMP FVIF supports frontline police officers and community partners whose mandate is to respond to and reduce incidents of family violence. It allows for the development of resources, tools and information to educate on the prevalence and dynamics of family violence and to encourage victims and witnesses to seek assistance. The objectives of the funding are to assist in preventing high-risk groups from re-offending; foster prevention in Indigenous communities; promote public awareness of relationship and family violence through conferences, seminars, presentations or workshops; assist victims of crime; and endorse Sexual Assault Investigators training.
