Executive Director

First Light Friendship Centre (First Light), formerly St. John’s Native Friendship Centre, is seeking a dynamic and collaborative leader as its Executive Director. First Light serves the urban Indigenous and non-Indigenous community in St. John’s, NL, by providing programs and services rooted in the revitalization, strengthening and celebration of Indigenous cultures and languages in the spirit of trust, respect, and friendship. The Executive Director is responsible for executing the vision and mandate of the organization with leadership and passion and working with the board on the long-term strategic direction of the organization.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated strong people management skills, including coaching, mentorship and supervision to develop and retain a staff complement of over 50 individuals. They will be an excellent communicator with the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with key internal and external stakeholders such as community partner organizations, Indigenous communities, funders, and government departments. The successful candidate will have extensive experience in operational planning, including budgeting, fund development, proposal writing, development and implementation of strategic and operational plans. They will have experience with financial management and have managed organizations with robust budgets.

The successful candidate will have a critical anti-oppression analysis lens, an undergraduate degree in a related field, and at least five years of related work experience – experience with a non-profit is an asset. They will identify as Indigenous and have a robust knowledge of Indigenous cultures, anti-oppression and decolonization, and an understanding of the Friendship Centre movement in Canada. They will have experience leading and motivating a team, have a record of achievement in a dynamic, multi-stakeholder environment and knowledge of relevant federal and provincial legislation such as labour standards, human rights, charities, etc.  A comprehensive financial and analytical background, and experience in strategic planning, budgeting, property management, policy development, media relations proficiency with social media, and non-profit board governance is an asset.
